Rahane: ‘When the team is struggling, it is important to show your character’ – These were the words of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane, reflecting on the team’s performance in IPL 2026. Despite facing numerous setbacks, including injuries and the loss of key players, Rahane led by example, emphasizing the importance of character in the face of adversity.

Emergence of Young Players

The biggest positives for KKR from the season were the emergence of young players like Kartik Tyagi and Anukul Roy. Tyagi finished the season with 18 wickets, the third-highest among all Indian bowlers in the league stage. Roy took nine wickets in 12 innings in his first full season and was also unbeaten in two successful chases.

According to Rahane, Tyagi was clear about his thought process and had a fantastic practice season. Roy, on the other hand, carried his confidence from a good Syed Mushtaq Ali season into the IPL. Rahane believes that these two players have the potential to do really well in the future and play at the highest level.

Leadership and Character

Rahane was asked whether he thought of stepping down for a reset while the season was still alive. However, he emphasized the importance of character and leadership, stating that he has always played with the right attitude and would never step down when the team is struggling.

Rahane also praised his team’s fight in a bittersweet campaign, saying that the players handled themselves well and that there’s lots to learn from the experience. Despite not qualifying for the playoffs, Rahane is proud of the boys and their ability to come back from a tough start to the season.

Looking Ahead to IPL 2027

As for IPL 2027, Rahane said that it was still too early to think about it. Instead, he wanted to sign the season off by praising his team’s fight and resilience. With the emergence of young players and the leadership of Rahane, KKR will be looking to build on their experiences from IPL 2026 and come back stronger in the next season.
