A Season of Leadership Contrasts in IPL 2026

As the IPL 2026 season reaches its thrilling business end, the spotlight has turned toward the tactical acumen and leadership qualities displayed by the franchise skippers. Former Indian batter and respected cricket pundit Wasim Jaffer has provided a comprehensive breakdown of the captaincy performances, ranking the leaders from tenth to first. His assessment has stirred significant conversation within the cricketing community, particularly regarding the struggle of high-profile leaders.

The Underperformers: Assessing the Bottom Tier

Jaffer did not mince his words when discussing the teams that failed to meet expectations. At the bottom of his rankings, he placed Rishabh Pant at the tenth spot. Pant, leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), saw his team struggle for consistency throughout the tournament. Finishing at the bottom of the points table with only four victories from 14 matches, LSG’s campaign was marked by tactical confusion and a lack of on-field direction, leading to Jaffer’s harsh but statistically backed ranking.

Similarly, Hardik Pandya faced scrutiny for his leadership of the Mumbai Indians. Despite boasting one of the strongest rosters on paper, the franchise failed to dominate, finishing ninth in the standings. Jaffer placed Pandya in the ninth position, highlighting the disparity between the squad’s talent and its actual output on the field.

Mid-Table Leadership Struggles

Moving up the order, the rankings reflect the tight nature of the IPL 2026 table. Ruturaj Gaikwad was placed eighth after a challenging season with the Chennai Super Kings, while Axar Patel of the Delhi Capitals secured the seventh position. Although the Capitals showed promise early on, their failure to maintain mid-season momentum ultimately kept them out of the playoff hunt.

Surprisingly, Riyan Parag took the sixth spot. Despite the skepticism surrounding his appointment, he successfully guided the Rajasthan Royals to the playoffs, proving his mettle in a high-pressure environment. Ajinkya Rahane was ranked fifth, recognized for his efforts in attempting to spearhead a comeback for the Kolkata Knight Riders, even though they missed the final cut.

The Top Tier: Excellence in Command

As the rankings shift toward the top, the quality of leadership becomes more pronounced. Shreyas Iyer, leading the Punjab Kings, was awarded the fourth spot. Despite his team failing to qualify for the playoffs due to a late-season collapse—suffering six consecutive defeats after winning six in a row—Jaffer credited his tactical influence on the team’s overall identity.

Shubman Gill earned the third position, largely due to his dual role as both captain and the batting engine for the Gujarat Titans. Scoring over 600 runs, Gill’s ability to lead by example was a pivotal factor in the Titans finishing in the second spot on the points table.

Sharing the second position were Pat Cummins and Ishan Kishan for their collective leadership of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Jaffer specifically praised Ishan Kishan’s role during the period when Cummins was sidelined due to injury, noting that his contribution was instrumental in the team’s successful qualification for the playoffs.

The Benchmark: Rajat Patidar at Number One

Topping the list is Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Rajat Patidar. Jaffer lauded Patidar for his consistency and his ability to make sharp decisions during high-stakes moments. Following a title-winning campaign in the previous year, Patidar proved his pedigree by leading RCB to the top of the points table this season. Beyond his captaincy, his personal form with the bat, accumulating around 400 runs, solidified his status as the most effective leader of the 2026 season.

“Number 1 has to be Rajat Patidar because he won the trophy last season. And again, this season, RCB was the first team to qualify and obviously get the top 2 spot. So Rajat Patidar is my number 1 captain,” Jaffer concluded. As the playoffs loom, the contrast between the tactical successes of leaders like Patidar and the struggles of Pant and Pandya will remain a central theme of the 2026 narrative.
