Did KKR Ignore BCCI’s Advice On Varun Chakaravarthy’s Injury? Ajinkya Rahane Bre
Did KKR Ignore BCCI‘s Advice On Varun Chakaravarthy’s Injury? Ajinkya Rahane Bre — the question has ignited discussions across the cricketing world after Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2026 campaign ended in heartbreak. Despite a stunning late-season comeback, KKR failed to qualify for the playoffs after Rajasthan Royals defeated Mumbai Indians, dashing their hopes just hours before their final match.
Varun Chakaravarthy’s Grit Amid Injury Scrutiny
Kolkata Knight Riders’ season was defined by resilience, with Varun Chakaravarthy emerging as a central figure in their fightback. The 34-year-old mystery spinner battled through multiple injuries, including a hairline fracture in his left toe and fractures in two fingers on his non-bowling hand. Yet, he returned to play a pivotal role in KKR’s six wins in seven matches — a run that nearly propelled them into the postseason.
Captain Rahane Defends Team’s Decision
Ajinkya Rahane, leading the side in a challenging season, broke his silence on the medical controversy surrounding Chakaravarthy. Addressing concerns head-on, Rahane emphasized that the decision to field the spinner was strictly based on medical clearance.
“See, our team’s physios and the physios of BCCI, NCA and the Indian team, there was a discussion among them. I don’t get involved in that at all. That’s their department. My department is how’s the player’s mindset, does the player want to play or not, how big is the risk,” Rahane stated.
He further clarified: “Yes, it’s important to consider the health factor, to stay fit. Your injuries shouldn’t increase. Yes, we think about that. But the physios felt that his injuries won’t increase.”
BCCI’s Involvement and Medical Coordination
In mid-May, reports surfaced that the BCCI had scrutinized KKR’s decision to deploy Chakaravarthy for his full four-over spell despite the toe fracture. The injury occurred on May 8 during a match against Delhi Capitals, forcing him to limp off the field. He subsequently missed the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
However, it was confirmed that KKR’s medical team remained in constant communication with the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence and national team physios, including Kamlesh Jain. A BCCI official told PTI: “I know for a fact that KKR physio is in touch with Team India physio [Kamlesh Jain]. There has been a communication from KKR to BCCI that in a previous match, Varun injured his left foot while saving a boundary. It is understood that he has a hairline fracture.”
As a centrally contracted player, Chakaravarthy’s fitness falls under BCCI’s purview, prompting potential intervention from national medical staff.
From World Cup Disappointment to IPL Redemption
Chakaravarthy’s IPL 2026 journey began poorly. After a lackluster performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup with India, he opened his campaign by conceding 79 runs across his first two matches without claiming a wicket. Injuries piled on, sidelining him temporarily.
But his return against Chennai Super Kings marked a turning point. Regaining form swiftly, he became a key cog in KKR’s late resurgence, delivering economical spells and crucial breakthroughs at pivotal moments.
KKR’s Remarkable Season Turnaround
Kolkata Knight Riders were written off after losing their first six matches of the season. Under Rahane’s leadership, however, the team mounted a dramatic comeback. Winning six of their final seven games, they kept playoff hopes alive until the very last matchday.
While they ultimately fell short, their transformation stands as one of the most compelling narratives of IPL 2026 — a testament to grit, team unity, and the relentless spirit embodied by players like Varun Chakaravarthy.
As the dust settles, the debate around player workload, franchise decisions, and BCCI oversight will continue. But one thing is clear: even in defeat, KKR’s fight left a lasting impression.
