IPL To Take Place 2 Times In A Year! BCCI Announces Massive Action – BCCI Explores Two-Window IPL Format to Manage Growth and Heat
A New Era for the Indian Premier League
The landscape of professional cricket is on the verge of a significant transformation. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has confirmed that the governing council is actively seeking alternative scheduling windows for the world’s most lucrative T20 tournament. As the competition continues to grow in stature and scope, the logistics of hosting such a massive event in a single block have come under intense scrutiny.
The Challenges of Expansion
The IPL 2026 season has reached its thrilling business end, with powerhouses like Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad competing for the ultimate prize. Since its commencement on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the tournament has once again captivated audiences globally. However, the current model of 74 matches is already pushing the limits of the traditional March-May calendar.
Looking ahead, the BCCI intends to expand the league significantly. The proposed roadmap involves shifting to a format where all ten teams play an equal number of home and away matches, which would see the total number of games jump to 94. Such an expansion demands a larger timeframe; however, the logistical reality of India’s climate poses a major obstacle. With the months of May and June bringing intense heat and humidity, conducting a tournament of this magnitude during that period presents health risks and discomfort for players, staff, and spectators alike.
A Potential Two-Window Solution
To address these challenges, the BCCI is contemplating a revolutionary two-window schedule. During an exclusive discussion with Sportstar, Arun Dhumal highlighted the possibility of splitting the IPL into two distinct phases. This approach would not only help avoid the peak of the Indian summer but also maximize the tournament’s commercial potential.
“Weather is another challenge that we are facing now with May getting very hot,” Dhumal explained. “We are also looking if we can find a window from February to April and then later in the year.” The proposed alternative suggests that the first half of the tournament could be held in the pre-monsoon season, while the second half could be integrated into the September-October window. This timing is particularly attractive for stakeholders, as it aligns perfectly with the pre-Diwali festive period, offering immense value to advertisers and broadcasters.
Collaborative Decision Making
The BCCI is acutely aware that any major change to the IPL schedule has a ripple effect on global cricket. Because the IPL is an integral part of the international cricketing ecosystem, the governing council is committed to a consultative process. Dhumal emphasized that the decision will not be made in a vacuum.
“We need to sit across and speak to the broadcaster for their opinion on whether the tournament can be moved to another window,” Dhumal stated. “We have to do what is best for the game because IPL does not impact only the BCCI; it impacts all other cricket boards and players who play across the globe. We will sit across with all our friends from other countries and find what works best for this tournament and cricket globally.”
Current Season Update
While the long-term future of the IPL’s structure is being debated, the excitement surrounding the 2026 season remains at an all-time high. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already secured their path to the final following a commanding performance against the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1.
Meanwhile, the intensity remains high for the remaining playoff spots. The Rajasthan Royals are set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in a high-stakes Eliminator. The winner of this clash will advance to Qualifier 2, where they will face the Gujarat Titans for the final spot in the tournament decider. The Mullanpur Stadium is slated to host these critical fixtures, with the grand finale set to take place at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 31. As the current season draws to a close, the discussions regarding the future structure of the league will undoubtedly continue to take center stage in the cricketing world.
