The Selection Controversy: Sanjay Manjrekar Demands Apology for Yashasvi Jaiswal

In a development that has sparked intense debate across the cricketing fraternity, former India batter and respected commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has strongly criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the national selection committee. Manjrekar asserted that young opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is owed a formal apology from the selectors after being dropped from the Indian One-Day International (ODI) squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan. The three-match ODI series is scheduled to commence on June 14, and the squad announcement has raised several eyebrows due to some unexpected inclusions and omissions.

Surprise Inclusions and Omissions in the ODI Squad

The squad, finalized by the selection panel led by former India all-rounder Ajit Agarkar, featured several surprising decisions that have polarized fans and pundits alike. Among the most notable omissions are young sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, and spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel. On the other hand, left-handed batter Ishan Kishan has earned a recall to the national setup.

The squad also reflects the physical toll of a demanding cricket calendar. Senior players Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami have been rested as they continue to recover from their respective injuries. However, the inclusion of regular captain Rohit Sharma and star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has come with a caveat, as both players have been selected with an asterisk over their current fitness levels. In terms of fresh talent, the selectors have handed maiden call-ups to seamers Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar, alongside promising left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey. While the rest of the squad aligns with expectations, the exclusion of India’s bright young prospects remains the central talking point.

Manjrekar Champions the Youth: Jaiswal and Sudharsan Overlooked

Speaking in an interview on Sportstar, Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his deep disappointment with the selection policy, arguing that the decision-makers have treated the country’s rising stars chemistry unfairly. He specifically highlighted Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan as players who have been unjustly sidelined in favor of aging veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Manjrekar pointed out that both young batters had performed exceptionally well in their limited opportunities. “Sai Sudharsan has got a couple of 50s in the last set of innings playing at the top of the order for India in ODIs. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s last ODI innings was a 116 not out, and these guys are not playing for India,” Manjrekar noted, highlighting the apparent contradiction in selection principles.

Questioning the Vision and Logic Behind Rohit Sharma’s Selection

The former Mumbai batsman did not hold back when analyzing the selection of senior opener Rohit Sharma. Manjrekar argued that Rohit’s current fitness struggles and dip in form made his inclusion a forced compromise, one that directly hindered the development of younger players.

Manjrekar questioned the long-term planning of the selection committee, asking, “The selectors have gone with a veteran whose fitness is a question mark, and he is clearly out of form. Explain that to me, what is the logic behind that, what is the vision?”

He further elaborated on how the selectors should have handled the situation if they felt absolutely compelled to include the veteran skipper. “If they were compelled, and had to make a compromise and pick Rohit Sharma for whatever reason, the first thing they have got to do is pick up the phone and apologise to Jaiswal, because this is a young player who has done tremendous things at the toughest level, he is in his prime with a bright future ahead.”

For Manjrekar, India currently possesses a ready-made, highly potent top three that represents the future of the format. “You have a tailor-made top three in Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jaiswal, and you are not backing them, and going towards Rohit Sharma. At least with Virat Kohli, there is some case,” he explained, indicating that Kohli’s selection was relatively more justifiable than Rohit’s under the current circumstances.

The Future of Indian Cricket: Transitioning Beyond the Veterans

A major theme of Manjrekar’s critique was the transition phase of the national team. He argued that the current crop of young Indian batters is fully capable of matching the legendary outputs of Kohli and Rohit if given a consistent run in the playing eleven. He urged Ajit Agarkar and his panel to prioritize the future of Indian cricket over past reputations.

“It cannot be that the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, believes that this is the right way forward for Indian cricket. I cannot imagine him thinking this is the right way forward,” Manjrekar stated firmly. “If you are going to focus so much on Rohit and Virat that you are going to ignore all the others, there comes a time when you look at the way forward for Indian cricket. All of these batters like Gill, Kishan, Sudharsan, and Gaikwad are class. Give them 10 innings, they will give you the same numbers that Virat and Rohit have.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Impressive but Sparse ODI Record

Due to a heavily congested top order, Yashasvi Jaiswal had to wait until 2025 to make his official ODI debut, despite having established himself as a regular feature in India’s Test and T20I lineups nearly two years prior. Despite his limited opportunities in the 50-over format, his numbers reflect immense potential.

To date, Jaiswal has played only 4 ODIs for India, accumulating 171 runs. His brief ODI career is highlighted by a brilliant, unbeaten knock of 116* in his most recent outing. Currently, the young left-hander boasts an exceptional batting average of 57.00 and a healthy strike rate of 86.00 in the format. With such statistics, his omission from the squad against Afghanistan has understandably raised serious questions about the selectors’ roadmap for the upcoming cycle.
