Rishabh Pant‘s Captaincy in the Crosshairs After LSG’s IPL 2026 Meltdown

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are facing a period of reckoning after a catastrophic IPL 2026 season that saw them finish at the bottom of the table with just 8 points. Under Rishabh Pant’s captaincy, the team managed only four wins in 14 matches, compounding their seventh-place finish in IPL 2025 with an even worse performance this year.

The back-to-back underwhelming campaigns have triggered serious discussions within the franchise about a potential leadership overhaul. Pant, who was handed the reins with high expectations in 2025, now finds his role as captain under severe threat.

Leadership Questions Mount

Tom Moody, LSG’s global director of cricket, did not shy away from addressing the elephant in the room. Speaking after their seven-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings on May 23, Moody acknowledged the team’s failure to meet expectations and hinted strongly at a leadership reset.

“From a captaincy point of view, he’s found it challenging, obviously, and the results reflect that,” Moody said, as reported by ESPNCricinfo. “And you do have to wonder whether that is a pressure that is reflected in his performance with the bat.”

Under Pant’s leadership across two seasons, LSG won only 10 of 28 matches. The team struggled with inconsistent batting, questionable field placements, and a lack of strategic clarity—issues that have now become impossible to ignore.

Pant’s Batting Form Also a Concern

Adding to the concerns is Pant’s personal performance with the bat. Once celebrated for his explosive stroke play and fearless approach, Pant managed just 581 runs in two seasons at a strike rate of 135.74—well below his career benchmarks. His highest score this season was a 64, and he failed to convert starts into big innings consistently.

Moody did not assign blame to Pant alone, emphasizing collective responsibility: “I think we’re all responsible. I don’t think it’s a time to point the finger at any individual.”

Internal Confusion and Coaching Doubts

Pant himself recently voiced concerns about decision-making within the camp, stating that too many voices in leadership created confusion on the field. This lack of clarity was evident throughout the season, with miscommunication during run chases and suboptimal bowling changes.

Head coach Justin Langer, while supportive of Pant personally, expressed disappointment with the overall output. The coaching staff is also expected to undergo review as part of the broader evaluation process.

What Lies Ahead for LSG?

Moody confirmed that the franchise will conduct a comprehensive review of all departments—batting, bowling, fielding, and leadership—before finalizing plans for IPL 2027. While no immediate decisions have been announced, the tone from the management suggests that change is imminent.

“We’ll consider all things,” Moody added. “Certainly, when it comes to the leadership of the franchise, it’s certainly something that we’ll be giving some very serious consideration to… it certainly looks like we’re needing to consider a reset.”

For Rishabh Pant, one of India’s most dynamic cricketers, the coming months could define not just his IPL future but also his long-term leadership credentials. While his talent remains unquestioned, the demands of captaincy at the highest level may require a reassessment—both from him and the franchise that once pinned its hopes on his rise.

As Lucknow Super Giants prepare for a complete rebuild, one thing is clear: the status quo is no longer an option.
