A New Chapter for Indian Women’s Cricket

The anticipation surrounding the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is reaching a fever pitch, and for the Indian women’s cricket team, the mission is clear: claim the global crown. Smriti Mandhana, the elegant and prolific opening batter, has articulated the sentiment of a squad that is no longer just competing, but aiming for complete dominance. Following their recent successes in the 50-over format, the Women in Blue are signaling a shift in mindset and approach that could prove pivotal on the global stage.

Under the steady leadership of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the team is entering the tournament with a blend of seasoned experience and explosive young talent. The journey begins on June 14 at the iconic Edgbaston in Birmingham, where India will face off against Pakistan in a high-voltage opening encounter. This match is expected to be a spectacle, drawing fans from across the globe to witness the intensity of this rivalry.

The Catalyst of Growth: WPL and International Exposure

Mandhana attributes much of the team’s evolution to the structure and exposure provided by the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The tournament has served as a platform for players to refine their skills under pressure, fostering a more aggressive and confident brand of cricket. Furthermore, Mandhana highlighted that the recent T20I series in Australia, despite the competitive challenges, played a crucial role in sharpening the squad’s tactical awareness.

“For sure, we will like to continue the good form which we’ve had, especially having the success in the 50-over format in the World Cup,” Mandhana stated. “And then, of course, WPL was also good for a lot of players to get that experience, plus the T20 series in Australia.”

Embracing Aggression and Depth

One of the most notable transformations in the current Indian setup is the batting depth. Historically, the team often relied heavily on a few top-order stalwarts. However, the emergence of power hitters like Richa Ghosh and Shafali Verma has allowed the top order to play with more freedom. Mandhana expressed her enthusiasm about this change, noting that having such firepower later in the lineup allows the team to dictate the tempo of the game.

“I feel great as a batter at the top of the order; we have so many power hitters coming in later. We can take our time. It has not been a typical strength for this Indian team. But now it’s turning out to be our strength because we have the likes of Shafali and Richa,” she added.

The Seed of Ambition

Reflecting on her career, Mandhana revealed that her motivation to win a World Cup was sparked early. Recalling her debut in 2014 as a teenager, she spoke about being struck by the sheer level of respect commanded by the Australian side. That experience left an indelible mark on her, fueling a decade-long ambition to elevate the Indian team to a similar pedestal of global dominance and prestige.

“I was like 16 or 17 when I played my first World Cup. But then I saw the respect for the Australian team, and for me, that is when I was like, that is what I want. As a player, that was pretty attractive—that when the Indian team goes out, we need to command that respect. I want to win the World Cup because I want to get that sort of feeling,” she shared.

Preparation and Road Ahead

The path to the World Cup is paved with rigorous preparation. Following their 3-2 series result against Australia, the team is set to take on England in a crucial three-match T20I series. These games, scheduled for May 28, May 30, and June 2 across Chelmsford, Bristol, and Taunton, will be instrumental in fine-tuning strategies before the main event.

India’s T20 World Cup campaign involves five challenging group-stage matches. After the opener against Pakistan, the team will face the Netherlands, South Africa, and Bangladesh, culminating in a highly anticipated showdown against Australia on June 28, 2026. With the hunger Mandhana describes, the team seems poised to embrace the challenges ahead and pursue their championship dreams with unwavering determination.
